I don’t quite understand the setup you’re talking about. Is it a portable report (like a remote control via IR/RF ?) or, is there a USB port you plug this thing into?

Either way first things first, have you searched for documentation regarding the device and it’s com protocols? It may be a standard that they mention or maybe they have an SDK ready. If you can’t find it consider contacting the manufacturer. Don’t bother reverse engineering if they’ll just give you what you need.

If that leads to a brick wall then you’re going to need to sniff the traffic somehow. Given this is automotive my first instinct would be to point you to a CAN bus sniffer, but if it’s USB, then maybe go down that route. (It could even be CAN over USB, but who knows). You’re going to have to do a lot of digging and searching.
