I’m just curious but is this even possible? If you havent given them any of your personal information and they only know your username and your profile pic and literally nothing else, can they somehow some way find your ip address?

No, if the app was designed logically and competently. Virtually all the actions done on the app should be sent to the social media provider’s servers, meaning that the attacker can’t see your IP. However, if you click on a link to an attacker-controlled website, they could grab your IP address unless you’re using a VPN, Tor, or a proxy. Maybe for some performance-intensive applications like voice or video chat **with the attacker**, there may be peer-to-peer connection that’ll allow them to get your IP, but really, not much can be done with an IP alone.

So as long as you watch what information you post online, don’t click on any links the attacker sends you, and don’t interact with the attacker, you should be fine. But if you’re paranoid, you can use a VPN or Tor. I’d recommend that if you’re going to click on any suspicious links.

Edit: Just saw the reply you made below, and you mentioning that some dude sent you a link to a Cain and Abel tutorial. Sounds to me like it’s just a script kiddie, you probably have nothing to worry about.

I suppose you’ve been seeing a trend on social media of accounts asking if they want to play a game and then saying your address, yeah no need to worry those are mostly fake but watch out from clicking any links that could give people your ip

They can definitely use Phishing techniques to get your IP.

If they are aware of some vulnerabilities in the social media platform they may be able to leverage these to get IP’s as well.
