Couple to Counter-Sue McDonald’s Vendor Taylor over Potential IP Theft of Their QSR Solution: The Cold War Over Hacking McDonald’s Ice Cream Machines

This was an article that I thoroughly enjoyed and really frames our industry for the good and bad it entails in a very real way, and the other industries and companies people in our field intermingle with, whether we like it or not.
I know this sub is mostly hands on and very dedicated to classic network and web attacks, but this article opened my eyes to a whole industry I was not aware of until today called QSR, which aims to put the fast food industry on steroids with the help of computer automation that would make things like ice cream machines a more kiosk like experience without an operating technician. POS systems, embedded solutions such as the one in the article and more already exist out there and I’m sure others here might not have thought about this. I wanted to break into embedded systems and was so caught up in thinking about large scale SCADA automation that I overlooked what is going on in the food industry right now. I think exciting times may come depending on how this litigation goes.
Yes, this isn’t a very technical read but I thought people with a similar background to mine would understand this and appreciate what a roller-coaster of a story this is, all over something as simple as an Ice Cream Machine.
Also, good job on the couple for not having a strong cybersecurity background but being able to pull off some insane OSINT to help solidify their position in court.
OG hackerman Bunnie Huang makes a cameo too. Nice to know what he’s been up too, chilling in Shenzen reverse engineering an ice cream machine, he’s living the dream.
