D.C. Data-Breach Enforcement Bill Gains Council Approval

The District of Columbia’s attorney general would get new authority to sue companies that fail to protect consumer data, under legislation approved by the city council.

D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine (D) would be able to use a consumer protection law to target violators, under the Security Breach Protection Amendment Act of 2020. The bill, which passed 12-0, also expands the types of consumer information companies must protect to include taxpayer identification numbers, genetic information, and DNA profiles.
