Free battery replacement for select Apple MacBooks from 2016 and 2017

It’s seldom for Apple to offer free replacement of any of its components to its users. The silicon giant is currently offering a free battery replacement for users that own a MacBook that lies in the list for the supported battery replacement. The offer stems from an OS update, the macOS BigSur 11.2.1, that address a grave software issue that displayed the battery status of a few MacBook as service recommend. The new update eradicates the issue, as all devices do not suffer from the same problem.

It is recommended to check for updates for your MacBook to check if you’re running the latest version of macOS with the fix for the battery issue. If the battery status remains the same and does not charge past one per cent, replace remains the only viable option. Availing the battery replacement will require a system check at the Apple Store where an Apple engineer will determine the status of your battery. So it is a replacement program that will only benefit users that have an incompetent battery.

Check battery health

To check the battery health of your MacBook follows the steps:

In macOS Big Sur, select Apple menu, then navigate to System Preferences, click Battery, select Battery in the sidebar, then click Battery Health.

In macOS Catalina or earlier, hold the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to reveal the battery status menu.

Supported Apple MacBook models for battery replacement

Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models are listed below:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)

Battery replacement for MacBooks can go north of 200 USD, so availing a free replacement doesn’t seem too shabby at all. The battery issue and persistent reminders make it difficult for the users to work with the MacBooks via a direct power input. Not all users will experience the battery issue as the problem can be attributed to the software part of the MacBooks. Apple is yet to make a statement about the root cause of the problem but wants to ensure the portability aspect of MacBook is not marred by a battery issue.

Do not go with a third party battery replacement as MacBook shuns the third party battery replacement in most cases wasting more money than you saved on the cheap knock-off.
