Technology is shifting incredibly fast today, with the amount and speed of change having entirely altered the world we live in. Advanced applications of existing technologies are being deployed each day, and new, emerging technologies are being developed at a rapid pace. The rate of change is numbing, and yet, it is the world we now live in and must find ways to thrive in daily.
The pandemic has been and continues to be both a challenge and an opportunity to use technology. International air travel, high-speed rail and our global transport industry mean we are one technology-connected economy. The virus was spread quickly due to the international connectivity we now have due to technology, and our global supply chains connect us like never before. Our economy has been changed due to this global event. New technology being deployed to connect people virtually have already altered the speed and depth of communication we now have with others. Technology will only continue to shift and advance.
Leaders and individuals must find new ways to learn about and understand what is developing in the global marketplace. Businesses and organizations must stay abreast of the latest technology developments and use them for their success.
Emerging technologies are driving both the present and future, such as big data, robotics, artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented realities, biotechnology, nanomaterials, 3D design and printing, miniaturized electro-mechanical elements and the Internet of Things (IoT). The array of new and emerging technologies offer so many more opportunities than ever before, presenting both a daunting and exciting opportunity.
What is also true is that the speed of technological change is only accelerating. What once took decades to evolve now takes only years or months. It’s the speed of change that has made the use of technology even more challenging.
As individuals, we must take this into account and commit to understanding its impact. As leaders, we must direct our efforts to understand what technologies are available and what is on the horizon. In doing so, we can adopt new technologies quickly and shift to emerging technologies when they are ripe for our use. Companies and organizations must do the same thing to stay relevant and healthy.
Nonprofit leaders must commit to following the latest technology trends in their industry. Spending time daily doing an environmental scan of developments in the nonprofit space has become a must. One area in particular to follow is software development as software platforms and digital delivery are changing all aspects of service and fundraising. Software developments are transforming every industry, including virtual interaction platforms, AI and social media. Fundraising methods are evolving quickly. With the advent of quantum computing, the ability to collect, analyze and use data to understand and serve customers will grow exponentially. These are only a few of the global technology shifts ahead for all of us.
We cannot stop the onslaught of new technology and its uses. Nor should we want to. Instead, we must accept it as the new normal and determine how we will use this aspect of our economic shift to our advantage. When we do so, we are maintaining our relevancy in today’s world. Continually learning about new technologies and their uses has become how all individuals and organizations must now operate.
Begin today to develop an ongoing effort to monitor and adopt new technologies into your life. This new habit will give you the ability to evolve at work and home and remain competitive in today’s rapidly changing global economy. Enjoy your journey.
